Sausage Party is not for kids, let’s get that up front. Read the label and take it seriously.

Cute, shiny graphics aside, it is unrelentingly rude and vulgar. It is also one of the funniest films of the year, particularly if rude and vulgar tickles your fancy (and I freely admit my fancy was well and truly tickled). Bring on the penis jokes.

Frank the sausage is shrink wrapped and looking forward to the day when the Gods will take him to the promised land. All going well, Brenda the Bun will be there too and they’ll be able to do what sausage and bun does best. The catch is that they and all the other consumer items at Shopwell’s Supermarket have been fed a lie. The Gods (us) aren’t benevolent care bringers, they’re demons who’ll slaughter then eat them without mercy! A morsel of insight (a demented jar of honey mustard) leads Frank on a quest to discover the truth and save his friends from a fiendish destiny. Cue penis jokes aplenty.

We’re firmly in South Park / Team America territory by way of Seth Rogan / Jonah Hill / James Franco and while it’s as frenetic, face-forward and as full of foul language as any of their comedies, there’s a level of wit and subversiveness that’s pleasingly fresh. That’s because Sausage Party sits on an exuberant bed of religious roasting which may be far from subtle, but is seldom witnessed from Hollywood (from anywhere really) and provides a welcome opportunity to laugh at the increasingly ideologically compressed world we live in. No one gets left behind, and plenty of penis jokes only makes it funnier.

By making a ‘studio’ film that is so not a studio film, Sausage Party is a revolutionary slice of subversion that all the funnier for it. Just be wary of the deceptive packaging or you’ll be explaining to the kids what pita bread and a bagel are doing in the middle of an orgy. It’s a penis joke.
