When a couple of enterprising criminals kidnap trophy wife Mickey (Jennifer Anniston), what they don't bank on is indifference.

They knew about husband Frank's (Tim Robbins) mistress and his money laundering operation, they didn't know about the divorce papers.

So starts this romp based on a book by Elmore Leonard that recalls early 90's adaptations like Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown. And while Life Of Crime is a sturdy film, it never comes close to capturing the mischievous tone of Tarantino although, on the plus side, nor is it nearly as violent.

The laconic coupling of Mos Def and John Hawkes is compelling as the kidnappers whose plans are sideswiped by Frank and his opportunistic lover Melanie (played with spunky verve by Isla Fischer).

Together they create the best moments which help overcome Jennifer Anniston's melancholic centre role, a leaden weight which keeps the film grounded (in the bad way).

Given it's groove-framed seventies setting, this is the kind of story that should snarl like Aretha Franklin. Instead it simpers like Johnny Mathis.
